Bio Identical Hormones

Home / Bio Identical Hormones

What are Bioidentical hormones or BHRT ?

These are hormones that are compounded or produced at specialized certified pharmacies that are molecularly identical to the hormones the body naturally produces. BHRT/Bioidentical hormones includes estrogen (estradiol, estrone, estriol), thyroid, progesterone, testosterone, growth hormone, melatonin, and adrenal hormones (DHEA, Cortisol) Its an art and a science to compound Bio-identical hormones and specialized certification is needed for that purpose. As opposed to synthetic hormones, these natural hormones cannot be patented, and this creates a huge controversy with pharmaceutical companies and the medical industry.

How are Bioidentical hormones supplied ?

These hormones can be given in the form of pills, capsules, liquids, creams, gels, troches, suppositories and pellets. Depending on the needs of the patient a combination of these forms can be administered or supplied. The art of BHRT is that they can be individualized to your specific needs. This is not a “one size fits all” type of medicine.

How are Hormones tested ?

Hormones can be tested using a combination of saliva, blood and urine. Advantages of saliva testing and urine testing is that they can be taken throughout an entire 28 day cycle to measure how your hormones fluctuate and how they interact with your daily activities especially for younger or premenopausal patients. Fluctuations in  hormones during premenopausal years can affect many bodily process like skin changes, mood, reproduction, bone health, sexual health, metabolism and sometimes a one day test, (ie blood testing) cannot measure those fluctuations that occur in a 28 day cycle. For patients after menopause a one day blood or one day saliva testing may be ideal since hormones do not fluctuate as much. Once you are taking hormones, urine hormone testing might help you understand how hormones are being metabolized within your body and can assist in preventing undesired hormonal reactions.

What are symptoms of low hormone levels?

Testosterone: Fatigue, decreased libido, low bone mass, poor motivation, loss of muscle strength
Thryoid: Weight gain or weight loss, low libido, mental fatigue, dry skin, body aches, memory lapses, constipation
Estrogen: Hot Flashes, night sweats, body aches, dry skin, cataracts, bone loss, low libido, depression, mood changes, weight gain
